Homeopathy can ease suffering quickly in situations of acute pain: where the problem has occurred recently, and has a clear cause. Examples of situations that may be helped by homeopathy include traumatic injuries (blunt trauma, sprains, strains, fractures, burns), surgical recovery, toothache and dental surgery, and acute flare ups of recurrent conditions such as period pains or headaches. In terms of potency and repetition, you may need to be prepared to repeat frequently if required. For example, if the pain is associated with an injury, if an initial dose eases the pain but the remedy stops helping or symptoms begin to return, repeat with one further dose, and continue this way for as long as needed.
If the cause of the pain is unclear, it is important to seek medical advice and investigation without delay. If the problem is long term and chronic in nature, consider professional homeopathic care to address the root cause, and to raise your overall level of health.
Here are twelve remedies often used in the management of acute pain. Each one has different indications according to the person’s experience of the pain, and the causative factors.
Aconite
Aconite is one of the first remedies to think of in acute pain which comes on with suddenness and intensity, and is accompanied by restlessness and fear. The pain is typically felt as intolerable, even to fear of death, and is worst at night. Complaints that come on after exposure to cold air or drafts, with tingling, numbness, and burning or tearing pains. Acute situations that may call for Aconite might include traumatic injuries (especially of the eyes), surgical recovery, headaches or earaches, where the symptoms match.
Arnica
Arnica is the first remedy to think of in pain that comes on as a result of physical trauma of any kind, or pain that dates back to a trauma (eg an old injury which remains painful). The affected parts feel sore, bruised, and as if beaten, and on lying down the bed may feel too hard. Situations of acute pain that may call for Arnica include mechanical injury, for example blows, falls, blunt trauma, sprains and fractures. It is also helpful in acute pain following surgery or dental work.
Belladonna
Belladonna is indicated in acute pain which comes on suddenly, and is intense and violent in character (compare Aconite). The pain is felt as burning, throbbing, pulsating or bursting. It may be accompanied by a rush of blood to the head, with redness and heat in the face. The acute pain is more typically right sided, and worse in the afternoon, or the later part of the night (after midnight). For example, think of Belladonna for injuries with heat, throbbing sensation and intense pain. It may also be helpful in acute pain associated with headache, toothache, local infections, and burns and sunburn, when the symptoms match.
Bryonia
Bryonia is an important remedy in acute pain management. It is most useful in intensely painful conditions, where the key factor is aggravation of the pain from even the slightest movement. This might include deep breathing, coughing, or even social interaction – the pain may make the person irritable, and they want to be left alone. There is a need to keep as still as possible, and perhaps to immobilise or apply firm pressure to the affected part (including lying on it) to control the pain. The pain is intense and sharp, bursting, stitching or tearing in character. Acute pain situations that may call for Bryonia include traumatic injuries such as fractures, sprains or dislocations, especially shoulder, knee or back injuries. Bryonia is also useful in surgical recovery.
Cantharis
Cantharis is the first remedy to think of in intensely painful burns, with redness and especially if there is rapid blistering.
Chamomilla
Chamomilla is indicated in acute pain which is experienced as completely intolerable: the person may become distressed, despairing, or angry and irritable with the pain. The character of the pain may vary, with sensations such as tearing, burning, tingling or benumbing, but the main indication leading to Chamomilla is hypersensitivity. Pain may be accompanied by vomiting or faintness, and Chamomilla is one of the main remedies for acute pain that prevents sleep. Situations that may call for Chamomilla include toothache, period pains, labour pains, and abdominal colic.
Eupatorium perfoliatum
Eupatorium is one of the main remedies to consider in the management of acute pain following a bone fracture or dislocation. The main indication is intense acute pain in the bones, worse for any movement (compare Bryonia). You may know Eupatorium for its use in the treatment of influenza: its main indication in flu is pain in the bones so intense it can feel as if they are broken. This correspondence means that Eupatorium is also a useful remedy for easing the intense pain in fractured bones.
Hepar sulph
Hepar sulph is a useful remedy to remember in painful inflamed wounds and abscesses. The pain is felt intensely – where Hepar sulph is indicated the person is highly sensitive to pain (compare Chamomilla), which may be experienced as burning, sharp and splinter-like. The affected area is typically highly sensitive to the slightest touch and also to cold.
Hypericum
Hypericum is known as the ‘Arnica of the Nerves’, and is indicated in painful injuries to areas rich in nerves. It can be very useful in intense pain following any traumatic injury. The pain is typically felt as violent, shooting, stabbing or benumbing, and may characteristically be felt as shooting along the nerves away from the site of the injury. It is often used in mechanical injuries (eg spinal trauma), injuries to nerve rich areas such as fingers, toes or face, or in surgical or dental recovery or toothache.
Mag phos
Mag phos is a remedy well known or its use in managing acute pain. So much so it has often been referred to as the ‘homeopathic aspirin’. Its particular indications are in addressing acute neuralgic pain, and the pains are typically experienced as stabbing, radiating or shooting. Pains are often sudden, like an electric shock. Where Mag phos is called for the pain is worse for cold, and eased by warmth and warm applications. It may be used in a wide range of situations, including toothache, period pains, headache and back pain.
Staphysagria
Staphysagria is indicated in acute pain following surgery. In particular it is useful where there is intense pain following abdominal or pelvic surgery, or after catheterisation.
Symphytum
Symphytum is a useful remedy for blunt trauma to the eye area, where the pain is felt in the eyeball. Alongside Bryonia and Eupatorium, it is used for pain following bone fractures, and is indicated where bone pain persists long after the injury. Symphytum also helps to promote reunion of bone during the healing process.

I suffer from gout. I read that remedies like Rhus Tox, Arnica, and Bryonia are often considered for inflammatory conditions. Which would you recommend?
Hi Brad, the success of homeopathic treatment for gout – or any other chronic condition – rests on the selection of a remedy that matches your exact symptom profile. Any remedy can be used for inflammation, the correct one for the case depends on the way the individual experiences their symptoms. Best wishes, Karen

Hi I’m a 67year old woman that is suffering from an ulcer on my heel that is excrushiating and neuropathic pain is terrible at present. It has opened up and is covering most of the back of my foot. I’m also suffering from lymphedema so my mobility at present is very poor due to all my ailments. I was just wondering what would be the best remedies that would be for me to take.
Hi Janet, thanks for your question. This sounds like a more complex long term picture, which is beyond the scope of home prescribing. I assume you are under the care of a medical doctor also? I recommend you consult a homeopath for professional care if you would like to add in some homeopathic support. They will be able to select remedies based on your whole symptom profile, check your response to treatment and monitor progress. Best wishes, Karen
Any recommendations for somebody who suffers from asbestosis and has severe coughing and acute pain in the chest, please
Hi Sally, thanks for your question. This situation is beyond the scope of self treatment – have you considered working with a homeopath for professional care? Best wishes, Karen

Hi, I suffer from rotator cuff injury to the right shoulder. A very heavy door closed on me. It’s been 3 months. It hurts a lot in the morning as the day progresses it becomes bearable. Please can you suggest homeopathic remedy? Thanks.
Hi, homeopathy can often be helpful in rotator cuff injuries. However the exact way you experience the pain needs to be matched to a suitable remedy, and there is insufficient information here to make any suggestions. You might like to look at this blog post, which has more specific remedy profiles for shoulder injury: https://karenleadbeater.co.uk/seven-remedies-for-shoulder-injury/. You can read up on any of the listed remedies and see which one best matches your experience of the injury. Best wishes, Karen
My partner is suffering alot with pain following a full knee replacement- nothing prescribed is helping at all. What do you suggest may help?
Hi Sophia, thanks for your question. The choice of remedies will depend on two key factors – the sensation of the pain, and the modalities (these are the factors or circumstances that ease or aggravate the pain). Take a look at my specific blog post on knee injuries here: https://karenleadbeater.co.uk/homeopathy-for-knee-injuries-eight-remedies/. The remedies will also apply in post operative support. The first remedies I would suggest you look at are Arnica, Bryonia and Ruta, but others may be indicated depending on your partner’s experience. I hope your partner recovers well. Best wishes, Karen
